After a long break from sailing, I got back on the water to shoot yacht racing again for the Australian Sailing 2021 Port Phillip Women’s Championship!

A couple of years ago I covered the Melbourne to Hobart Yacht Race and the Winter Series for the amazing team over at the Ocean Racing Club of Victoria where together we won the Sports Promotion Award from Australian Sailing for Best Social Media.

As an ex yachtie myself, it was a blast to get out there and shoot the action, get wet and take some awesome photos. For some reason that I can’t explain, every single race I covered, we were for the most part becalmed. Hardly a breath of wind which made taking the epic images of these amazing boats crashing through the sea, a little difficult.

It’s a curse, I’m sure of it. As a result, I have hundreds of photos of pretty colours, seascapes and people enjoying nice sunny days on their boats, but with no action.

Well about a month ago I took a call from Australian Sailing enquiring whether I’d be available to cover two races as part of the 2021 Port Phillip Women’s Championship Series. Of course I was delighted to accept the assignment but wondered whether that dreaded curse would strike again. I probably should have warned them because for the first race – it did.

Thankfully though, the wind gods must have been feeling our love because for the second race, held last weekend, we had wind!!! OK, it wasn’t a force 8 gail, but it was a solid 20 knots gusting to 30 every now and again. The sun was mostly shining too and it made for a really fun (and tiring) day shooting boats.

The championships series is organized by Australian Sailing’s She Sails program and is designed to recognise all of the amazing female contributors to yacht racing, and to encourage women of all ages to enjoy sailing through organised activities at their local sailing club.

I was honoured to be a part of this event and to work with all of the amazing crews and race officials. If the opportunity comes up again to cover one of their events, I will jump at it, only hoping that my horrid curse doesn’t return to haunt me.
