FAQ

Buying Prints

Many of my photographs are available to buy as fine art prints or digital downloads. However, due to licensing restrictions for various series and codes, I can’t sell everything. If you see an image you like on my website, Facebook or Instagram feed, reach out to me and I’ll let you know whether I can sell it or not.

How to Order

Many prints are available directly from here, the process is easy, highly secure and safe. However if you see a photograph on my social media feeds or in one of the portfolio galleries on this website that you would be interested in purchasing, please contact me with a description or a screen shot of the image. I can’t sell everything I produce due to certain licencing restrictions in place for various racing series and sports codes, but it can’t hurt to ask!

Available Sizes

Standard sizes range from 8 x 12 inches to 16.5 x 24.3 inches. All prints available for sale in my shop will have the available sizes listed on the purchase page. If you’re interested in a size which isn’t listed, particularity a larger size, get in touch because not all files are conducive to large prints. Particularly if printed on fine art paper, however I can arrange to print to canvas with is much more forgiving when printing in larger sizes.

Please note that for Canvas prints and anything larger than 16.5 to 24.3 inches, I would need to outsource to an external print service so we ask you to allow up to 14 days turnaround. If this interests you, get in touch for a quote.

Sizes listed are in inches and refer to image size, not paper size. They will relate to the most commonly sized frames or matts available at most stores. For example, if you choose a print that is 12 x 18 inches, once mounted in a frame, or a matt within a frame, there will be no borders. The image will fit perfectly to the frame. However I will cut the paper such that there will be at least a 15mm border edge to make it easier to handle and mount in a frame. I am able to provide larger borders if you prefer, just leave a note in the addition information box in checkout.

If you need a print with different aspect ratio from what you see on the web (i.e. require custom cropping of the image) then please contact us before purchasing the print. Also due to the nature of this request all sales for custom cropping or different aspect ratio are final and there is no refund on these prints.

Framing is not available at this time.

Materials

Printer & Ink

Original fine art prints are proofed and printed with utmost care with a Canon imagePROGRAF PRO-1000 large format printer using Canon Lucia Pro pigment inks and Chroma Optimizer for a finish on our gloss and metallic prints similar to traditional silver-halide photographic prints. Note that Chroma Optimizer is not used or required on matte fine art media. We use archival fine art papers from Ilford for our satin finish prints, certified for 100+ years. The Gloss and Metallic finishes available are rated for around 50 years, so they are great to enjoy as art prints, though they are not archival.

Paper

All of my prints are produced with ILFORD Fine Art papers.  Ilford is a world-famous brand and is one of the great pioneers of the photographic industry, with a proud 135-year history.

I offer both a satin (semi gloss) and metallic gloss papers:

Ilford Galerie Gold Fibre Silk (310gsm) features an inkjet layer coated directly onto a true baryta (barium sulphate) layer and fibre base to produce images with exceptional gamut for vivid colour reproduction as well as creamy whites and velvety blacks for the unique look of traditional silver halide photo paper. The media creates high definition images with an extended tonal range and excellent archival properties making it a must for exhibition quality prints. This versatile media is perfect for colour images with vibrancy and depth or for producing a sympathetic re-creation of a traditional black and white image.

Satin paper is best used when framed under glass or plexi. It’s the industry standard and has true to life skin tones and really helps enhance details and colours in the image. The satin ‘texture’ also helps with fingerprints and glare.

Ilford Galerie Metallic Gloss (260gsm) offers photographers the ability to print images with a true ‘wow’ factor. The iridium finish gives every image a three-dimensional look ensuring that each print truly comes to life. The resin coated paper is 260gsm and is suitable for creating display and exhibition prints or alternatively prints can be added to photo albums or portfolio work to create additional impact. Although the media adds an additional creative angle to portrait and studio photography, it also lends itself perfectly to enhancing mechanical, industrial or architectural images.

Metallic Gloss photo paper has a 3D effect which brings out the light in the image with a slight shimmer. It provides for beautifully saturated colours, rich blacks and better contrast and is best framed without glass, such as mounted on foam.

Selecting a Finish

If you intend to frame your print under plexiglass or glass, I recommend a matte or satin finish as this reduces reflection, and the glass also adds a certain amount of gloss look to the print. Our gloss papers are a beautiful Baryta finish as opposed to a full-on gloss paper, so reflection is not a big problem. I also use an incredible Metallic gloss paper with a depth similar to looking at a slide on a light table. This really suits black and white images, as well as images with lots of dark areas and large swaths of colour.

Packaging

Prints are rolled and shipped in a sturdy card tubes to ensure that prints arrive without damage. We also wrap a sheet of paper around the rolled print, to prevent the print from opening up to fill the tube. This makes it very easy to remove the print.

Delivery Times

In general, your prints will be created on demand and shipped within 72 hours of placing your order. Because they are all created personally and made to order, if you happen to place your order while I’m away on assignment, it could take us longer to fulfil your order. If your order is time critical, please either contact me beforehand to check on delivery times or allow plenty of time.

Returns

Requests for returns due to shipping damage must be made within one (1) week of receiving your order. Prints are packed carefully, but photographs are delicate, and accidents may happen. Please inspect your order soon after it arrives and let me know right away about any damage that occurred in shipment. Be sure to handle your print carefully, and avoid overly rubbing the surface.

Returns not made in compliance with this procedure will not obligate Dave Hewison Photography in any way. Once I have confirmed the damage, we will resend your shipment or refund the cost of your order.

If you have any other queries, please contact me. I will help you to achieve a satisfactory resolution.
