Melbourne At Night Under COVID-19 Curfew

Melbourne under curfew, a city devoid of life. A view of the Bourke Street Mall looking west as seen from Russell Street during COVID-19 in Melbourne, Australia. Premier Daniel Andrews announced yesterday his plans to extend Victoria's State of Emergency for another 12 months giving his government and his Chief Health Officer, Brett Sutton, unprecedented powers as well as the ability to curtail democratic checks and balances. It comes as case numbers continue to fall. Responsibility for the current wave the State is experiencing rests solely on the Andrews Governments shoulders and some are saying that if they cannot manage hotel quarantine effectively, handing them full and total power without accountability would be a fatal mistake. Victoria records another 149 cases overnight and a further 24 deaths, 21 in Aged Care.

So what does a city under curfew look like? Well if you’re not a working photographer, I wouldn’t suggest wandering into the CBD to find out. I was stopped by police 4 times in a three hour period. I had to show ID my work permit and all was fine but if I didn’t have my permit, I would have been fined $1,600 each time.
